Dr. Sarika Gopalakrishnan is a research scientist specializing in applying virtual reality and augmented reality in the field of Low vision care.
She received her Ph.D. from the SASTRA University, Thanjavur, India, in 2022 while working at the Medical Research Foundation as head of the department of low vision care for 14 years in Chennai, India. She is pursuing her Postdoctoral research fellowship at Envision Research Institute, USA. It was in 2014 that Sarika was recognized as the first Indian woman to be named a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) in the field of low vision.
As the first Indian female to pursue a Ph.D. in low vision care, Dr. Sarika investigated the application of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology in low vision care for the assessment and intervention of people with low vision, respectively. Her Ph.D. research focused on how virtual and augmented reality can be applied to improve the quality of life for individuals with low vision. To assess various functional vision parameters such as visual search behavior, head movements, and spatial orientation in a 3D virtual bank scenario, she developed a 3D virtual bank scenario in her thesis. She utilized augmented reality technology to understand better the improvement in vision and quality of life in low-vision patients. In her current research, she is exploring how augmented reality can help people with low vision to carry out their everyday activities independently by improving the visual resolution of objects and navigation in typical environments.
