Dr. K Vaitheeswaran, a distinguished Principal Scientist (Scientist – E), is currently spearheading significant research initiatives at the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Centre of Disease Informatics and Research. Since his inception in 2012, he has been instrumental in driving both the technical and scientific agenda of the organization, serving in multifaceted roles such as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, nodal officer, biostatistician, and data management coordinator.
In addition to his administrative and research responsibilities, Dr. Vaitheeswaran has a profound commitment to fostering the next generation of researchers. He has been an influential mentor to statistics research scholars and has provided indispensable statistical guidance to postgraduate students, optometrists, graduate students, and DNB medical fellows.
As a senior biostatistician at Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. Vaitheeswaran has made significant strides in the field of ophthalmology. His pioneering work in longitudinal and cross-sectional studies related to diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and quality of life assessments has been groundbreaking. His doctoral research, which developed a risk scoring system to identify and predict the progression of diabetic retinopathy, has been particularly influential.
Dr. Vaitheeswaran's research prowess is evident in his extensive body of work, which includes 85 publications in prestigious national and international peer-reviewed scientific journals. His expertise, primarily in the fields of ophthalmology and noncommunicable diseases, has positioned him as a luminary in these domains. His ongoing collaboration with our institution as a statistical mentor for postdoctoral scholars underscores his unwavering commitment to the scientific community.
